If there is one park where I think Lightning Lane is absolutely worth it, it is Hollywood Studios. The rides here are so good…and there are not that many of them. That means almost every ride ends up with a long line.

My family loves almost everything in this park. Slinky Dog Dash? A favorite. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway? So much fun. Rise of the Resistance? One of the most immersive rides Disney has ever made. Tower of Terror? Absolutely not for me…but my husband and oldest daughter would ride it over and over if they could.

Because there are fewer rides and so many of them are popular, having a good Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane strategy can make a huge difference in your day. Instead of spending all day standing in line, you can use that time to watch shows, meet characters, explore Galaxy’s Edge, or do a little shopping on Hollywood Boulevard.

What Is a Lightning Lane?

Lightning Lane is Disney’s paid skip-the-line system. There are three different levels:

• Lightning Lane Multi Pass: Lets you pre-book up to 3 attractions in advance. After you use one, you can book another. (Pro-tip: If you have park hopper passes, you are able to use Lightning Lanes across all 4 parks)
• Lightning Lane Single Pass: Used for the most popular ride in the park that is not included in Multipass.
• Lightning Lane Premier Access: Lets you use every available Lightning Lane (including Single Pass and Multipass) in the park one time without choosing return times. This comes at a premium cost, however, it requires little planning or strategy.

For most families, I think Hollywood Studios is one of the best parks to buy Lightning Lane Multi Pass. If you want to ride everything, adding the Single Pass can make sense too.

Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane: The Most Important Tier 1 Ride

If there is one ride to prioritize for your Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane selections, it is Slinky Dog Dash.

Slinky Dog Dash Lightning Lanes disappear faster than almost anything else in Walt Disney World. If you are staying at a Disney resort and can book 7 days ahead, grab Slinky Dog first. If you are staying off property and booking 3 days ahead, still try for Slinky Dog first, but have a backup plan.

If Slinky Dog Dash is gone, that does not mean you won’t get a chance at lightning lane for it. Keep checking throughout the day, use my pin to the top technique (see below), and get ready.

If you’re unable to get Slinky Dog Dash, any of the other tier 1 rides is great. In the summer of 2026, once Rockin’ Roller Coaster reopens with the new Muppets retheme, this will become very popular and a great pick.

Pinning Strategy for Hollywood Studios

One strategy I use for lightning lanes across Disney World is by “pinning” the next ride I hope to book to the top of my tip board.

In the My Disney Experience App, you can view and book your lightning lanes. However, all the rides are listed alphabetically by park. If you’re hoping to grab Slinky Dog Dash, that’s towards the bottom. By the time you scroll down, it’s likely gone.

Instead, go to preferences under your plan and set up your tip board. I suggest selecting only 1, maybe 2, rides. That will put them at the top of the screen. You can then keep refreshing until the rides becomes available. Once you’ve snagged that lightning lane, simply update the priority ride(s).

Best Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane Multi-Pass Picks

As a reminder, when you are inititally booking lightning lanes at Hollywood Studios (or any park for that matter), you are able to book (1) tier 1 ride and (2) tier 2 rides.

Once you tap into any of your multipass rides in the park, tiers fall away and you can book any multipass rides across any of the parks, subject to availability. (Again, you need park hopper pass to use the lightning lanes in other parks)

• One top-tier attraction:
  • Slinky Dog Dash
  • Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
  • Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
  • Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster (closed for retheme until summer 2026)
• Two lower-tier attractions:
  • Tower of Terror
  • Toy Story Mania
  • Star Tours
  • Alien Swirling Saucers
  • Frozen Sing-Along

My favorite strategy is:

• Slinky Dog Dash – Tier 1
• Alient Swirling Saucers (or Star Tours) – Magic Key Ride
• Toy Story Mania – Popular Tier 2 ride

Toy Story Mania and Tower of Terror are the most popular Tier 2 rides. Personally, I tend to choose Toy Story because I’m a chicken. Ha! But I feel that Tower of Terror often has more availability than Toy Story.

Should You Buy a Single Pass for Rise of the Resistance?

Yes. If Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is important to your family, I think the Lightning Lane Single Pass is worth it.

Rise of the Resistance often has some of the longest waits in all of Disney World. It is also a ride that can go down occasionally, which can make the standby line even longer once it reopens. The ride also is one of the longest experiences, making it most worth it. Even if your family is not a die-hard Star Wars family, I feel that it’s very enjoyable and immersive.

Note that this ride does have single rider option. Single-rider lines typically have shorter wait times. However, you WILL BE split up from your group. So you must be willing to split up, with every member over the age of 7.

For my family, using a Single Pass for Rise of the Resistance plus Multi Pass for the rest of the park is usually the sweet spot.

Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane Tips by Season

Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane in Winter

Winter can be one of the best times to visit Hollywood Studios, especially in January and early February. Crowds are often lower.

During the Christmas season, Slinky Dog Dash, Rise of the Resistance, and Tower of Terror can all sell out early. If you are visiting during holiday weeks, book your Lightning Lanes the second your window opens. Even more, staying on property and even having your Hollywood Studios day later in your trip will give you an advantage when booking.

Bonus tip: Don’t skip the Frozen sing along over the holidays. Not only is this show a favorite of mine, it also features a special holiday update that is extra magical.

Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane in Spring

Spring break crowds can make Hollywood Studios feel packed. This is one of the times of year when having a strategy matters most.

Prioritize Slinky Dog Dash and Rise of the Resistance first, then use your extra time to enjoy shows and snacks instead of waiting in long lines.

Setting priorities and having patience will be key to surviving this park during spring break crowd season.

Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane in Summer

Summer in Hollywood Studios is hot, crowded, and often includes afternoon thunderstorms.

That matters because Slinky Dog Dash is outdoors. If storms roll in during the afternoon, the ride may temporarily close. Waiting in line for the ride to go down due to lightning in the area is a MAJOR bummer. However, if it goes down keep an eye out. I have been able to walk up just before they reopened and taken advantage of a shorter wait.

That is why I recommend trying to ride Slinky Dog Dash earlier in the day in summer, either with your first Lightning Lane or by rope dropping it. Otherwise, aim for much later in the evening.

I also love using Lightning Lane in the summer because it gives my family more time inside, enjoying air conditioning with shows like Frozen Sing-Along.

Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane in Fall

Fall can feel less crowded than spring or Christmas, but weekends, fall breaks, and Halloween season still bring large crowds.

Slinky Dog Dash and Rise of the Resistance are still the first rides I would prioritize. If you are visiting during a party season or long weekend, I would use the exact same strategy I would during spring break.

My Favorite Hollywood Studios Lightning Lane Strategy

If I had one perfect day in Hollywood Studios, here is exactly what I would do:

• Buy Lightning Lane Multi Pass
• Buy Single Pass for Rise of the Resistance
• Book Slinky Dog Dash, Alien Swirling Saucers and Toy Story Mania in advance
• Rope drop Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway or Millennium Falcon. Or consider rope dropping Slinky Dog Dash, for a chance at riding it twice in one day!
• Book another Lightning Lane as soon as you tap into your first ride
• Use the extra time for shows, shopping, snacks, and exploring Galaxy’s Edge

That strategy works especially well for my family because we would much rather spend our day doing more than standing in line.
