When Does Disney World Christmas Actually Start?

One of the most common questions families ask is: when does Christmas begin at Disney World?

Disney World Christmas season kicks off in early November — well before Thanksgiving. This is great news if you want to experience the holiday magic with thinner crowds, but there are a few nuances to understand about the timing.

BUT, and this is a big one. Disney rolls out the Christmas season over the month of November.

Here’s a general breakdown of how the holidays roll out across property:

Early November: Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios get into the Christmas spirit first. Decorations go up and the beloved special ticketed events begin — Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom and Jollywood Nights at Hollywood Studios. These events typically start running in early to mid-November, so if those are on your bucket list, you don’t need to wait until December.

After Thanksgiving: EPCOT’s incredible EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays launches after Thanksgiving and runs through the end of December. This is one of the most beloved holiday experiences on all of Disney World property, so we’ll dig into it more below.

The Big Tip on Timing: Going earlier in the season (early-to-mid November) generally means fewer crowds, which can make a huge difference in your experience. The tradeoff? Not everything will be fully up and running yet — some entertainment, overlays, and offerings ramp up as the season progresses. Knowing this going in helps you set the right expectations.

Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom is the crown jewel of Disney World at Christmas, and for good reason. The park transforms into a winter wonderland with:

EPCOT’s International Festival of the Holidays is a holiday experience unlike anything else in Disney World — or honestly, anywhere. Running after Thanksgiving through late December, the festival brings together:

• Storytellers in many of the World Showcase pavilions sharing their culture’s unique holiday traditions
• Candlelight Processional — one of the most moving and beloved events of the entire Disney World Christmas season. Every Park and Resort Gets Its Own Tree

One of the details that makes Disney World Christmas feel so thoughtful is that every park has its own beautifully decorated Christmas tree — and so does every resort. But it’s not just a tree slapped in a lobby: the theming is intentional and tailored to each location. The tree at the Grand Floridian feels elegant and classic. At Animal Kingdom Lodge, the tree reflects the resort’s African-inspired aesthetic. The tree at Wilderness Lodge fits right into its rustic, nature-lodge charm. It’s a small thing that adds up to a lot when you notice it across the property.

Disney Springs & Holiday PhotoPass

Disney Springs gets fully into the Christmas spirit too — and beyond the shopping and dining, it’s worth noting the PhotoPass Studio at Disney Springs, which features a festive holiday backdrop available for family photos during the season. It’s a fun and easy way to get a beautiful holiday portrait without the chaos of the parks.

Speaking of photos: holiday PhotoPass Magic Shots are available across all of Walt Disney World during the Christmas season. These are those fun, whimsical digital overlays that Disney’s photographers add to your shots — think snow falling around your family, Santa peeking in, or other festive surprises. If you’re using the Memory Maker add-on (or have it included with your ticket package), these are absolutely worth seeking out. Ask any PhotoPass photographer in the parks about magic shots — they love doing them.

Resort Hopping: A Disney World Christmas Hidden Gem

Here’s something that not every family thinks to do — but once you do it, it becomes a holiday tradition: resort hopping to see the Christmas decorations.

Disney’s Deluxe resorts go all out for the holidays. We’re talking grand lobbies draped in garland and lights, massive Christmas trees, and the pièce de résistance: gingerbread displays that are truly works of art.

Several of the Deluxe resorts feature large-scale gingerbread houses and sculptures crafted by Disney’s culinary team — and you can often purchase pieces to take home. Some of the most popular stops include:

• Grand Floridian Resort & Spa — home to one of the most iconic full-size gingerbread houses on property. It’s massive, it smells incredible, and it draws a crowd for good reason. (Note, 2025 there was no gingerbread house due to construction in the lobby. We are hopeful they will bring it back for 2026).
• BoardWalk Inn — features a beautiful gingerbread display in the lobby
• Wilderness Lodge — stunning holiday décor that fits perfectly with the lodge’s rustic, cozy aesthetic, and a gingerbread cabin.
• Animal Kingdom Lodge — and my personal favorite stop of all: instead of a traditional gingerbread house, Animal Kingdom Lodge features gingerbread animals. It is absolutely charming and feels completely unique to the resort’s identity. If you’re doing a resort hop, do not skip this one.

You don’t need to be a guest at these resorts to walk through the lobbies and enjoy the decorations — just take a Disney bus, Minnie Van, or rideshare over. Many families make a dedicated afternoon or evening of it, hopping from resort to resort with hot drinks in hand. It’s one of the most magical and underrated ways to experience Disney World Christmas.

Tips for Planning Your Disney World Christmas Trip

Buy special event tickets early — and earlier dates are less expensive.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and Jollywood Nights both sell out — sometimes weeks or even months in advance, especially for popular dates. As soon as you know your trip dates, get those tickets. Don’t assume you can grab them last minute. One more reason to book early: ticket prices for these events increase as you get closer to Christmas. Early-November party dates are typically the most affordable, with prices climbing as the season progresses and dates fill up. Booking early doesn’t just protect your spot — it saves you money too.

Go earlier in the season for smaller crowds.

Early-to-mid November offers a noticeably different crowd experience than mid-December. If your schedule is flexible, the first few weeks of November can be a sweet spot — festive atmosphere with more breathing room. Just know that some offerings (like the Festival of the Holidays at EPCOT) won’t be available yet.

Build in resort hopping time.

Dedicate at least one evening to exploring the resort lobbies and gingerbread displays. It costs nothing extra (beyond transportation), and it’s one of those experiences that creates lasting memories.

Check the Candlelight Processional dining package.

If the Candlelight Processional at EPCOT is on your list, look into the dining packages early. They sell out, and having a guaranteed seat for this experience is absolutely worth it. For my visit, I did the Candlelight Processional package at Garden Grill. It made for a great day.

Layer up for evenings.

December evenings in Florida can actually get chilly — especially if you’re staying out for fireworks or late-night parties. Pack a light jacket or layer for the family. (Or if you’re like me, a perfect excuse to grab a souvenier sweatshirt).

Use early park entry and extended evening hours strategically.

If you’re staying at a Disney resort, take advantage of early entry at the parks. During the holiday season when things are busy, those extra 30 minutes before regular guests arrive can make a real difference.

The Bottom Line: Is Disney World Christmas Worth It?

Yes. A thousand times yes. Disney World Christmas is one of the most immersive, joyful, and genuinely magical experiences you can give your family.
