When planning any vacation that includes navigating the airport with kids, the stress-level immediately increases. There are plenty of questions and worry. Don’t sweat it. As a mom of 6 who’s traveled with kids as young as 2 months and as old as 13, I’m here to share my top tips.
One of the most effective ways to reduce stress when navigating the airport with kids is to know the rules and what to expect. Understanding security procedures, packing requirements, and airport layouts can help you prepare and make the experience smoother for everyone. When you’re prepared, you’re better equipped to handle the inevitable surprises that come with traveling with children.
However, also know, it’s okay if you’re figuring a few things out as you go. Airport staff can be super helpful in getting you to where you need to go.
TSA Pre-check is one of the best investments you can make if you’re traveling with kids. For an extra fee, this service allows you to breeze through security without removing shoes, laptops, or liquids. Plus, kids under 13 can accompany you through the TSA Pre-check line, making it even easier to get your family through security quickly and with minimal stress. It’s a small investment that pays off big time when you’re trying to keep the travel day smooth and easy.
If you’re bringing a stroller to Disney, you can check your stroller at the gate. Most airlines do not have a fee for this (I always fly Alaska, but check with your airline). A stroller can be a lifesaver for keeping kids contained and making your way through the airport more efficiently. When you arrive at your gate, talk to the attendants—they’ll give you a tag, and you can roll your stroller right up to the plane doors. Simply fold it down, and they’ll have it ready for you when you land. This convenience can make a world of difference, especially with younger kids.
Bonus tip: Ensure your stroller is Disney-approved. They have very specific measurements and do not allow wagons (unless medically necessary). Our side-by-side stroller was within the guidelines. Check out how we packed the stroller for a day in Disney!
For younger children, bringing their car seat can be a smart move, especially if you’ll need one at your destination. You have two options: gate-check the car seat, or bring it on the plane (as long as it’s TSA-approved, which you can verify on the side of the car seat). Using a car seat on the plane can help keep little ones buckled in and more likely to fall asleep during the flight, making the journey more peaceful for everyone.
One of the simplest yet most effective tips for airport travel with kids is to bring empty water bottles and snack cups. Most airports have water stations available once you’re through security, so you can easily fill up before boarding. Having snacks and water on hand during the flight will help keep kids content and hydrated, making the experience more pleasant for everyone.
By being prepared and using these tips, you can turn what might seem like a daunting travel day into a smooth, even enjoyable experience. Remember, traveling with kids doesn’t have to be stressful—especially when you’re on your way to the most magical place on Earth!
